Celarix
develops Internet and Intranet-based software to address the
logistics issues faced by manufacturing, distribution and
retail companies engaged in global trade.
For many
companies, the challenges of managing their supply chain have
become increasingly complex as their operations have become
more global. These companies, with global supply chains, are
realizing their challenges are less related to the physical
movement of product, but rather the management of the corresponding
information flow. While a number of supply chain management
software products exist today which help companies manage
their production, planning and manufacturing processes, very
few have addressed the needs of the global logistics function.
Celarix is developing software solutions focused specifically
on this function.
The Company's
first product, Celarix.com iSuite, provides critical information
about shipments while they are in transit and allows logistics
personnel to proactively manage their supply chain. Subsequent
product releases will include applications to automate the
freight payment process for international shipments and a
customs management module. This combination of products will
allow Celarix to offer the only comprehensive suite of applications
focused on the needs of the global logistics manager.
Celarix
will provide its services to clients using a three-stage strategy:
(1) traditional software for managing the logistics process,
(2) web hosting for client access to logistics applications,
and (3) service advisory and implementation services. Each
stage introduces different revenue elements in the distribution
chain.
Celarix
is also set to launch Celarix.com exchange, an on-line marketplace
for buying and selling global transportation services over
the Internet. Celarix.com exchange allows offers of cargo
and space to be posted worldwide instantly using the Internet.
It allows exchange partners to target offers and bids to specific
trades, strings, commodity groups, equipment types and even
specific parties - all by name or anonymously. The Company
expects to have nearly 3,000 containers committed to the Exchange
from day 1. Some of the world's largest shippers, including
Weyhauser, Englehard, Nike, Georgia Pacific, Toys R Us and
Cargill, have registered to use the system.
In September
1999, Celarix completed a $5.25 million convertible preferred
stock offering. Lead investors included Charles River Ventures
and TL Ventures III. The Company has now raised over $10 million
through equity funding.
Evan Schumacher,
Celarix's founder and Chief Executive Officer, is a graduate
of Kellogg's Graduate School of Management who has seven years
of logistics and software implementation experience. He is
spearheading this effort based on his experience as a supply
chain strategy consultant, functional logistics line manager,
and project manager of logistics information systems implementations
while at KPMG Peat Marwick, LA Gear, and the Stride Rite Corporation.
Graham
Lubie, Celarix's Executive Vice President, is also a graduate
of Kellogg's Graduate School of Management. Graham was born
in Pretoria, South Africa and moved to the U.S. in 1985. He
received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and
worked for Anderson Consulting's system design group prior
to co-founding Celarix.
