DJ - Good afternoon on this Friday,
July 25th. Welcome to the Come Along With
Don and Carl audio update. We had a minor
disaster today when Alan Bobillot, chief
of our service crew for the China Clipper,
that's what we call this Packard Clipper
convertible. Packard Clipper was the model
designation for Packard in those days,
so since we're taking it to China we call
it the China Clipper. At any rate, we
went to get some additional steel plating
to protect the engine pan and transmission
and Alan was involved in an automobile
accident when an airport van ran a stoplight
and smashed into Alan's volkswagon camper
and fortunately Alan had on his safety
belt and the damage was a big knot on
the side of his head where he went through
the driver's window. They took him to
the emergency room at the hospital. He
has a very bad headache and is not working
now, but we don't think there is any permanent
damage to him, we hope not. We have assistance
from Peter Portugal, who is putting on
the steel plates because we have to get
the car down this weekend to the Oakland
docks. We've made some very good improvements
to the performance of the car that we
learned in our trip to California to New
York and then from New York back to California.
Don's comments about the
sculpture on the Bonneville Salt Flats,
as I looked at it, it looked like a giant
metal lollipop tree. Very unusual. Driving
across the Bonneville Salt Flats on this
trip, going back east and them coming
back, brought back memories of the 1950s
when my father would go to the Bonneville
Salt Flats and attempt speed records with
a Class C Dragster. I hope we have better
luck going around the world than I had
in attempting the 200 mile mark on the
Bonneville Salt Flats.
Back to our trip. We expect
to take the car down to Oakland, get it
containerized. Have the car all packed
with a first aid kit, sleeping bags, tent,
parts, eating utensils for the picnics
we'll have and so forth, so forth. I hope
all the friends and relatives of Don and
I keep tuning in and getting these reports.
We will keep them coming for you. Hope
you all have a nice weekend.
