DJ -Welcome back
to the update channel with Carl and Don.
We have some information to share with
you that answers many questions that have
been asked, so let us tell you that the
update reports will continue while the
car is undergoing refinements and is being
shipped to China. Every other day we'll
bring you information that is pertinent
to the preparation and to all of the activity
surrounding the race event. Preparations
have been underway for several months
and in the case of the organizers, a few
years and we thought you would benefit
from hearing about some of that preparation.
For example, a lot of attention has been
paid to health and related health issues.
Currency is a consideration, moving in
and out of 13 countries, how currency
is going to be managed with a minimal
of hassles. Documentation and visas that
are required has had melodrama associated
with it, particularly because of the current
events in Iran and the prevailing attitude
of China. For tonight we want to report
to you that the update reports will continue
to be available and we hope that you'll
benefit by staying up with the information
that we intend to share with you. We'd
like to comment tonight about the computer
web site, www.newyorktoparis1997.com.
For those of you who have computers, there
are some aspects of the web site that
are really quite fascinating. For example,
you'll find many comments from people
who have logged into the web site and
signed the "Guest Book". These
comments have come from people all over
the world. Friends and family of Carl,
business acquaintances and people who
have seen the car with the identity of
the web site and have jotted down the
information, gone to their computer and
tuned in or logged on and left comments.
It's really been rather fascinating to
see some of these comments which have
come from San Francisco, Chicago and from
New York. It's been rather remarkable.
Another feature of the web site that I
found personally startling was that the
Wisconsin Network staff, headed by Rick
Kolstad, who are maintaining and managing
the web site, have added some photographs
of the trip. These are photos that I personally
took, but I have not seen the photos since
they were returned for development and
some of the photos were selected and placed
on the web site. So I literally, in visiting
and browsing the web site Monday evening,
saw some of the photographs that I took
for the first time and photos that I have
never seen myself, I had observed inserted
with text comments on the web site. Quite
a remarkable movement of information.
We intend to continue that with the use
of digital photography. It's going to
be our effort to try to capture images
digitally from Peking to Paris and then
to transmit them by computer back to the
Wisconsin Network staff and then onto
the web site for you to see first hand.
Our own sort of version of outerspace
image capturing and image sharing. It
remains to be seen if we can accomplish
that - whether it's by digital camera
or by the quick transportation of film
and then placing it on the web site. So
those are some insights about the movement
of information and images concerning the
Around The World trip.
We've also added something
which should be a major convenience for
those of you who are accessing the update
reports through the toll free phone number.
Additional channels will make it possible
for you to receive the updates without
getting a busy signal. Quite to our surprise
the popularity of the updates created
a situation where folks were getting busy
signals before they could get into the
update report. That should now be eliminated
as a result of additional telephone channels
being added, which we're told will reduce
the number of busy signals.
On Monday evening, I had
the pleasure of watching the Hollywood
version of "The Great Race",
a movie about the theme of The Great Race
from New York to Paris. While it's not
a documentary of the actual race, it does
use the occasion of the race as a theme
for a Hollywood spoof and comedy featuring
Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood.
Warner Brothers Classics has the movie
available at any of the video stores and
I found a Blockbuster store that had the
film for $9.95 and purchased a copy. I'd
recommend it. It's light, funny and a
little different era of film making and
it is based on the theme of Around The
World - New York to Paris, which makes
it just that much more interesting. There
are also some books on the 1907 and 1908
races that are available in libraries
and a couple of current issues done in
the 1960's. We'll report those titles,
publishers and authors to you at another
time. I want to finish this report by
again reminding you that it is our intent
to carry on with the updates here for
the period until the race reconvenes in
Peking and additional channels have made
it convenient for you to gain access.
We're glad you joined us for this update
and come on back again for another in
the next 24 to 48 hours. On behalf of
Carl, this is Don saying so long.
