Detail of the Last Judgement depicting Christ the Judge and the Madonna with the writing "Michelangelo"

View of the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel with the writings "Anno 1994" and "Musei Vaticani III"

Historical Notes - In 1533 Michelangelo Buonarroti was commissioned by Pope Clement VII Medici to paint the Last Judgement on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. Painted between 1536 and 1541, the Last Judgement illustrates humanity in the face of salvation preceding the moment of Divine Verdict. The struggle between the forces of eternal grace and punishment, the Chosen and the Condemned, are represented by the figures in the movement around Christ the Judge, the Madonna and the Saints.
